The building was originally constructed in 1854, was the first building in Pensacola constructed for the U.S. Government. It was located on the northwest corner of Palafox and Government Streets. The original occupancy was the Old Customs House, and later housed the U.S. Postal Service, and subsequently the administrative offices for Escambia County. The recent renovation work included removal of the 2nd floor mezzanine added in 1938 and raising the first floor ceiling height to 20 feet. The original plaster ceilings and columns were completely restored during the renovation. Original marble floors and wood plank flooring were also restored to their original use. The additions of accessible restrooms were added as well during this renovation.
